The Reverend Dr. Bob N. Wallace

The Reverend Dr. Bob N. Wallace was called to be Pastor of Everglades Community Church March 19, 2006.

He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and attended the public schools there and graduated from Will Rogers High School. He attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulsa University. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity degree from Southern Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, and earned a Doctor of Sacred Theology (Magna cum Laude) from Bethany Theological Seminary, Dothan, Alabama. He was a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Speech at Southern Seminary and an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Religion at the University of Richmond, Virginia.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Chaplain and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. Some of his duty stations were at the Naval Air Station, Millington, Tennessee, Destroyer Squadron SIX, Charleston, South Carolina, US Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia, US Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia, Naval Station, Treasure Island, San Francisco, California and with the United States Marines. He was involved with the Berlin Crisis, the Lebanon Crisis, and the Cuban Missile Crisis during the "Cold War" and the beginning of the Vietnam War.

Following his naval career, he served on the national staff of the Episcopal Church in the United States as General Convention Manager and Meetings Coordinator. From his thirteen years experience in that capacity he wrote a book titled, The General Convention of the Episcopal Church that is still available at

He and his wife, Jane, have lived in Naples since 1984. During that time he has served as Pastor to Greystone Mobile Home Park, the Hitching Post Mobile Home Park, the KOA, and Lely Palms Retirement Communities.

Pastor Bob is married to Jane Southwick Wallace who is a native of Louisville, Kentucky. All of their family remains in Louisville, Indiana and Chicago and they have one daughter, Bonnie, who lives in Naples. They also have two Cocker Spaniels, named Duke and Duchess, and four goldfish, whose names are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They live in Lely Golf Estates off Rattlesnake-Hammock Road.

Stan Kanning was born in Lakeland, Fla. and baptized in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in 1941. He moved to Jacksonville, Fla. with his family at the age of 1, where he attended school and was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in 1955. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and then from Jacksonville University in 1966, after serving 4 years in the Air Force. He has held many offices in various Lutheran Churches over the years.

While attending college, Stan worked for Esso Oil Company. He remained with the company for over 37 years, while they went thru several name changes. When he retired, the company had become Exxon Mobil.

Stan and his wife, Virginia, began attending the Everglades Community Church in 2003, after retiring and moving to what had been their vacation home. Stan serves the Community Church as a member of the Board of Elders, head of the Board of Trustees, and is Chairman of the Board of Governors.

 Virginia Kanning was born in Hickory, NC and moved to Jacksonville, Fla. when she was 10 years old.  This is where she met her future husband Stan at Grace Lutheran Church in 1955. 

After moving to Coral Springs, Fla. in 1974 with her husband and 3 young sons, Virginia graduated from Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, Fla. and worked for JM Family Enterprises Inc. for 15 years. 

Since moving to Everglades City, Virginia serves on the Board of Directors for Friends of the Museum and serves Everglades Community Church as Treasurer and a member of several committees.

Mitch PetersPianist and Organist, Mitch Peters

Mitch was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his music career began about age 10, playing piano, organ and singing in church with his brother and sister. he later, sang with a traveling boys trio and became the church organist at age 12.

During the next few years, he was Staff Musician at King Recording Studios, where many hit records were recorded. He also worked in TV and music events.

He joined Bobby Vee, whose hits included "Devil or Angel" and "Please Don't Ask About Barbara". The band toured with other big names of the time, such as Connie Francis and the late Roy Orbison.

He joined the USAF and served in Special Services, entertaining all around the United States. He proceeded to tour for the next 12 years before moving to Marco Island in 1972.

In 1974, Mitch won a Dove Award, the award for the gospel division of the Grammy Awards, for his original song, "A Father's Prayer". The song was made famous by the Blackwood Brothers.

From 1972 until 1985, Mitch was the Entertainment Director for The Deltona Corporation and joined The Marco Hilton in 1985 and worked until New Years Eve, 2000.

Mitch has served several times as Chairman of the American Cancer Society Benefit held in honor of the late Faye Gober in the Banquet Hall above Stan's Idle Hour Restaurant in Goodland.

Mitch has worked the last few years in Sales and Marketing for QRS Music and now Brookside Marina, continuing to play special events around Southwest Florida.
